Riverside, Liverpool
Riverside station, Liverpool was provided by the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board specifically for boat trains (in particular the LNWR American Specials). The station was only the width of a roadway from the Liverpool landing stage, in its time the largest floating structure in the world, which allowed liners to berth or sail irrespective of the state of the tide.
Because of weight restrictions on the line through Liverpool docks, the engine(s) that worked the American Specials from Euston were detached at Edge Hill (and attached at Edge Hill in the up direction). Two "Special Tanks", rebuilt as side tanks, painted in full lined livery and named "Euston" and "Liverpool" normally worked the trains between Edge Hill and Riverside.
