Rocking Arms

Also known as Rocking Levers.

A set of levers that transfer the oscillating movement of one rod to that of another rod moving in the opposite direction.

Rocking arms are normally associated with four-cylinder engines where the motion from one set of valves is used to operate a second set by means of levers, rather than a complete additional set of valve gear.

One example is the 'Jubilee' class compounds where the inside valve gear was connected to valves for the outside cylinders via levers mounted ahead of the cylinders. In the 'Claughton' class locomotives the outside valve gear operated valves for the inside cylinders in a similar manner.
