Running Number
The number actually carried by a locomotive, carriage or wagon, used to identify it for traffic purposes. Analogous to the registration number of a car.
Other numbers might be recorded for internal or engineering purposes, such as sequential building numbers, motion numbers, boiler numbers, account numbers and so forth.
